The One Where We're Not Done Yet!
This post is my personal, honest review of Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm's Fight for Change!
Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm's Fight for Change
Written by Tameka Fryer Brown | Illustrated by Nina Crews
I am really excited and honored to be a reviewer for the 10th Annual Multicultural Children's Book Day this year. Not only do I get to write about children's books but also read new books by authors I may not have read before. I LOVE history and having the opportunity to read about the life and work of a remarkable woman in Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm's Fight for Change by Tameka Fryer Brown was a delight. This empowering picture book biography from Lerner Publishing Group's imprint Millbrook Press is a must have for every school and home library.
Shirley Chisholm was a natural-born fighter. She didn’t like to be bossed and she wanted things to be fair.
Brooklyn-born Shirley Chisholm was smart and ambitious. She poured her energy into whatever she did―from teaching young children to becoming Brooklyn’s first Black assemblywoman. Not afraid to blaze a trail, she became the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first woman to seriously run for US president. With a vision of liberty and justice for all, she worked for equal rights, for the environment, for children, and for health care. Even now, her legacy lives on and inspires others to continue her work . . . which is not done yet.
Stirring free verse by Tameka Fryer Brown and evocative illustrations by Nina Crews provide an inspirational look at changemaker Shirley Chisholm

The Story - A Spoiler Free Review
Oh my Goodness! What a read!!! Since I love history and majored in Political Science my first two years in college, having the opportunity to read and review Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm's Fight for Change was a treat. I knew I would love it and I did, but it only took me reading a few pages to know that one does not have to be a history buff or a Pol Sci major to appreciate the incredible work of art this book is.
"Don't listen to those who say you can't. Listen to the voice inside yourself that says, "I can.""
Shirley Chisholm
Masterfully written by Tomeka Fryer Brown the text tugs at the heartstrings, as we follow along Shirley Chisholm's inspiring journey. Gorgeous illustrations by Nina Crews draw us in, bring this story to life and allow us to feel that we too are a part of it. Would I recommend "Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm's Fight for Change" to school, city, and home libraries? ABSOLUTELY!!!
And it's not because I am a woman, and it's not because I am an author or love history, justice, and trailblazing stories. Nor because my website's moto is "Inspire! Empower! Uplift!" and this beautiful story somehow manages to acomplish all three. It is because I am a mom, raising the next generation of creatives, inventors and trailblazers, and I know that I want them, nay...I NEED them to have the confidence to be themselves, drive a positive change in the world and have the strength to stand up for what's right someday and be able to say: "NOT DONE YET!"
