1. Marvel at the Breathtaking Cypress Bayou Scenery
Nestled between Lake O’The Pines and Caddo Lake, right on the Big Cypress Bayou, Jefferson TX is a gateway to a world of wonder that will mesmerize, surprise and delight visitors of all ages. Home to the largest Cypress forest in the world the bayou offers lush woodlands, picturesque meadows, varied wildlife and of course, majestic cypress trees covered in Spanish moss.
The serene scenery changes at twilight into a mysterious one, no less breathtaking and inviting than the one during the day. The Bayou includes a series of wetlands East of Caddo Lake known as Big Cypress, Black Cypress and Little Cypress Bayous. It was these watery byways, that turned Jefferson into one of the state’s “Queen Cities” and its busiest inland port by the 1850s. It is also those waterways and lakes that draw in tourists, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts year-round to Uncertain, Karnak and Jefferson, TX.
Visitors can explore the wetlands and the varied wildlife that call the Cypress Bayou home by taking one of Turning Basin’s bayou boat tours, renting a canoe or kayak from Riverbend Outfitters to paddle through the waterways, or going fishing or camping. The area is a bird lover’s and photographer’s paradise offering fantastic birdwatching and photo tours. A few companies like Caddo Lake Boat Tours combine the Big Cypress Bayou with Caddo Lake and as many times as we have taken their tours we have had a different, but equally magical experience. Just taking the time to stop and admire the sights, even standing by the shore, is worth the trip.
2. Watch the Sunset Over Lake O’The Pines
Lake O’The Pines was a complete surprise for me. While looking for a place to stay in Jefferson we found a charming cabin on the shores of this gorgeous lake and absolutely fell in love with the area. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and surrounded by tall pines, Lake O’The Pines sits on an area of 16,919 acres. Perfect for fishing it contains large mouth bass, spotted bass, catfish, white bass, crappie, sunfish, and chain pickerel.
There are several marinas on the lake, as well as parks and campgrounds. It’s great for boating, canoeing and kayaking. It even has a few designated swimming beaches like Alley Creek, Brushy Creek and Johnson Creek Campgrounds as well as Lakeside Park. Driving from our cabin to Jefferson TX we loved the view of the Dam and the lake from the road. A truly spectacular sight it led us to Brushy Creek and Lakeside Parks. To get there take FM726 in stead of FM3001. We didn’t know about these parks, but took FM726 by chance and so glad we did. A must do if you are in the area.
One of the best things to do at Lake O’The Pines is enjoying the spectacular sunsets and serene mornings. A lovely place to unwind, go for a retreat, spend time with loved ones or finish that book or project you have been working on. The key is to spend enough time to see the sunset in all it’s glory. The sky changes as the sun dips behind the pines in a gorgeous dance of colors mirrored in the waters. It has to be one of my favorite places to watch the sunset in Texas.
3. Tour the Whimsical Caddo Lake
The first time I saw pictures of Caddo lake I knew I had to see it in person. As beautiful as the pictures are they don’t do it justice. I have seen it during different seasons and loved it every time. Just fifteen miles east of Jefferson is Texas’ largest natural lake and straddles the Texas-Louisiana border. Rich in natural resources, wildlife and history, the lake is an escape for nature lovers.
Overhanging cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, dark waters and winding waterways create a sense of mystery like it’s right out of a ferry tale. My favorite activity at the lake are the tours as no two are the same. If time allows I would strongly recommend taking both a daytime and a sunset trip on the lake. Both spectacular.
We love Caddo Lake Bayou Tours, Big Cypress Tours, and Ole Jigger Adventures for tours and Riverbend Outfitters
for rentals. Those are the ones we have used, but have heard great things about other companies in the area like Caddo Lake Fishing for fishing trips and Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours leaving from Karnack, TX.
The two companies are on my list for next time. The tours we have taken so far were all leaving from Shady Glade Marina in Uncertain, TX which we really enjoyed firstly because of the lovely view and photo opportunities, and secondly because of the restaurant on site.
The best time to visit is in the Spring or Fall if you like the best weather, but Summers with Lotus flowers blooming, and whimsical winters are not to be missed. I would recommend taking binoculars for bird watching. We used our old Russian ones from the late 80s, but here is a highly rated pair at a great price if you need ones.
4. See a President’s Signature at Jefferson TX Excelsior House Hotel
The Excelsior House Hotel in Jefferson TX is one of those places that every visitor to Jefferson should stop by at. The oldest continuously operated hotel in Texas, it was built by the early Jefferson resident Captain William Perry and originally served as his house. He was the first to guide a steamboat to Jefferson, which eventually became the largest and most significant river port in the state. The house starts taking in boarders in 1958 and has welcomed guests since.
Among the many notable visitors over the years are President Ulysses S. Grant, Oscar Wilde, Rutherford B. Hayes, Lady Bird Johnson, and Steven Spielberg. Walking into this incredible hotel is like stepping back in time. From the decor to the architecture the details are stunning. The first time we walked in was to get tickets for the Atlanta – Jay Gould’s private rail car, which is on display across the street from the Excelsior. More on the historic rail car below.
Delighted by the outstanding customer service, we knew we had to stay there. Popular for weddings, the hotel offers a grand ballroom and the fountain courtyard, both gorgeous venues. I personally love the courtyard and the fact that guests can sit and relax there or have breakfast. My other favorite spot is the front of the Excelsior hotel. Sitting in the chairs there it truly feels like you have traveled back in time awaiting your carriage.
The rooms are lovely and of course the decor reflects the history of the place. Don’t miss the display in the lobby, including the Excelsior Hotel’s guest books with signatures of notable guests. As you are looking around don’t forget to look up – the light fixtures and chandeliers are stunning.
5. Grab a Drink at the Old McGarity’s Saloon
McGarity’s Salon is located in downtown, right across the street from the Jefferson Historical Museum. First opened in the 1860s as one of the many local saloons it stands today still. From the varied menu and drinks to the decor and atmosphere the McGarity’s Saloon is the perfect spot to stop by for a bite while in Jefferson.
Serving Irish and American specialties, including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, an extensive list of beer and wines and a lovely brunch, McGarities Saloon has something for everyone. Kids would love the decor, outdoor seating area, rich children’s menu and mini pac-man games to play while waiting for their order. Couples will enjoy romantic dinner with live music. And history fans will love the ambiance and history of an Old West saloon.
The service is great and I love the place settings on all the tables. One feels immediately welcome. But that’s not all. Now guests can stay at McGarity’s in a spacious apartment right above the restaurant with available room service. It sleeps 6 and includes everything one might need for a comfortable stay. Just step out on the iron balcony and enjoy modern comfort in a historic building.
6. Learn about Jefferson’s 200-Year Old History at The Historical Museum
The Jefferson Historical Museum’s home, a 1888 Federal Court House and U.S. Post Office building, stands tall and proud in downtown Jefferson – red brick, three flour structure offering a window to the past for locals and tourists alike. Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the trip for my kids, the museum offers an impressive collection of Civil War artifacts, antique furniture and art, Caddo Indian relics and items that relate to Jefferson’s Steamboat industry to name a few.
I personally loved the historic papers, maps and photographs as well as the exhibits showcasing pioneer life. Fascinating displays that provide a glimpse of what life used to be like and show how much has change in just a century. Don’t miss the train display, housed in a smaller building behind the museum.
It is deffinitely worth a stop. An mpressive display with representing Texas in the 1950’s with such intricate details that we didn’t want to leave and had to visit a couple of times while there.
7. Admire the Jefferson TX Golden Era Mural
I had heard a lot about Jefferson TX Golden Era Mural and had seen pictures, but being there and seeing it in person made me realize just how massive and stunning it is. Facing the Historical Museum building it is located right next to McGarity’s Saloon and Restaurant.
Recently restored, the 1987 oil painting mural mural covers nearly 200 years long history and heritage of Jefferson. Prominently depicted in the center of the mural is a Steamboat unloading goods, a nod to the days when Jefferson was a prominent river port and the sixth largest city in Texas. Gas lights at the bottom left corner illustrate Jefferson’s legacy as the first city in the state to use natural gas for artificial lighting.
The top left is where we see the founders of Jefferson TX including Captain William Perry, the builder of the Excelsior House Hotel. From the founders on the left corner we go to the top right where a depiction of the 1873 detonation of the massive stoppage of the Red River, marks the end of Jefferson’s Steamboat days. We even see The House of Seasons, currently ran as a B&B, and railroad baron Jay Gould, whose proposal to turn Jefferson into a Railroad hub was not just rejected but mocked, leaving the town without means for trade once the Steamboat days were over.
Above it all is Thomas Jefferson, the town’s namesake along with the Texas, Union, and the original confederacy flags. Every detail in this incredible piece of art speaks to Jefferson’s past, of the ups and downs, successes, and shortcomings. Mostly, it speaks of those who have come before us to build the foundation of a town many now call home.
8. Pay a Visit to America’s Last Train Trestle Bridge
Jefferson’s Howe Truss Train Trestle bridge was built in 1897 by the Phoenix Bridge Company in Philadelphia and installed in Jefferson in 1907. It still stands today the last of its kind, straddled over the Big Cypress Bayou, its aged rustic structure in sharp contrast with the lush greenery surrounding it. One can still see what remains of the original train tracks of this only remaining train trestle bridge with a design by American architect Howe Truss
Port Jefferson Nature Center is a lovely park with bear statues in front of the bridge, making for a beautiful and rather instagrammable photos. As awe inspiring as it is during the day, the trestle bridge is a must see after sunset as well. A beautiful light show illuminates the night as the rusty exterior fades away and this century old marvel comes to life again.
9. Buy Gifts at the Old Time Jefferson Texas General Store
I LOVE visiting the Jefferson Texas General store. From the old blue Volkswagen at the front to the juke box and old time candy counter, a trip to the general store has it all.
Shelves stocked with Texas jams, jellies and salsas as well as plenty of souveniers you would want to take home. Steping through the doors the atmosphere is so authentic and woke up the child in me.
Yes, I did take pictures of coke bottles. Aren’t they lovely? Those of you who grew up in the 70s, 80s and 90s know what I am talking about.
The store even has a Soda fountain, offers Root beer floats, antiques, candles, music and so much more. One of my favorite spots, hands down. People of all ages will enjoy this one. Make sure to stop by even if just for the experience. It will be worth it.
10. Walk Through a 19th Century Luxury Train Car – The Atlanta
I remember taking the old sleeper train from Sofia to Moscow back in the early 80s and while the journey was exhausting, it was certainly an experience I would never forget. Complete with dining cars those trains kept us entertained for days and we they were quite comfortable. Touring Jay Gould’s Private Rail car in Jefferson TX, right across the street from the famous Excelsior House Hotel, reminded me of the golden days train luxury travel.
The Atlanta itself has been very well maintained and visitors can walk through it in small groups. There is a tour guide, but they do give visitors plenty of time to look around and take pictures.
The private car includes a kitchen, dining room, four staterooms, a butler’s pantry and even a ballroom. The decor is representative of the 1800s from the fixtures to the furniture.
I really enjoyed the experience – a nostalgic, bitter sweet one. Luxury train travel is making headlines once again recently with train journeys in Europe, Asia and even North America, which include food and drinks on board, so I am hoping some day I manage to take one of them.
11. Shop for Tresures at the Many Jefferson TX Antique Stores
Jefferson TX is no stranger to antique shopping. There are so many Antique stores in Jeferson TX, all special in their own way. You can easily spend hours exploring vintage and antique items. There is something for everyone and then some.
Many of the stores also sell local jams, spice mixes, pickles and sauces, which for me was a lovely surprise. There are too many to list but Jefferson Antique Mall, Old Mills Antiques, and GG’s Antiques and Collectibles are a good start.
12. Go Wine Tasting at one of the Best Wineries on the East Texas Wine Trail
A stop at Enoch’s is a worthwhile experience so make sure not to miss it. Start by visiting Enoch’s Wine and Coffee House in town for a hot drink, glass of wine or a bite. The menu includes charcuterie boards, sandwiches, salads and dips. Bring the kids for the special flat breads and PB&J sandwiches. Spend a romantic afternoon with your loved one over a glass of local wine. Better yet visit the upscale tasting room offering flights carefully cultivated by wine ambassadors. You can even prepare a wine board to take home with your choice of selected wines.
From there, head over to Harleton, TX to visit the lovely Enoch’s Stomp Vineyard and Winery. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of East Texas is to explore the Piney Woods Wine Trail. Driving through the winding roads of the woods you the hill where the property is located. The moment you turn into the it the view is breathtaking. The drive up the hill towards the tasting room, restaurant and villas feels as if you are transported to Tuscany. Pictures do not do justice to this East Texas Beauty.
Fantastic tours, wine tasting and now rental villas on the property are some of the reasons Enoch Stomp is one of our favorite spots in East Texas.
Take a walk, go up to the terrace, enjoy the stunning views, have a bite at the Restaurant or sit at the Tasting Room covered deck serving delicious pizza and amazing charcuterie boards. A true gem just minutes from Jefferson, Enoch Stomp is a must see and perfect for both couples and families.
13. Stay at a Charming Jefferson Texas Bed & Breakfast
Ahh, the B&B capital of Texas Jefferson certainly has plenty of options of places to stay. More than 200 I hear. Many of them historic homes opening their doors to visitors, complete with lush gardens and yummy breakfast. All of them charming, unique, and feature historically themed room decor. Some of the most notable ones are White Oak Manor, The Carriage House, The Steamboat Inn, Kennedy Manor, The House of Seasons and Azalea Inn.
During the holidays the homes get a makeover with lights and festive decor, making them really shine. Springtime brings blooming flowers in the gardens promising a true escape. And in the Fall, the colors, the perfect weather and decor all over create a cozy, warm, and calming retreat setting that will make you want to stay a lot longer than a weekend.
14. Listen to Mechanical Music Instruments at the Museum of Measurement and Time
The stars of the Museum of Measurement and Time in Jefferson TX are the clocks of all shapes and sizes. They are the main reason people visit and deservedly so. A large selection of stunning and unique pieces some dating back as far as 1700s. In addition to the clocks the exhibits include early surveying equipment like solar instruments, measuring tools and calculating devices.
The big surprise for me though were the mechanical musical instruments, which I almost missed. The exhibit is in a room at the back of the museum and I absolutely loved it. Sometimes they do demonstrations on how the instruments play and it is such a fascinating sight and beautiful sound.
15. Stock Up at the Port Jefferson Outpost
The Port Jefferson Outpost has it all. It’s a diner serving breakfast and lunch, a coffee and tea bar, ice cream, books, jams. The great selection of merchandise includes homemade soaps and lotions, as well as candles and gifts. They also cary a large selection of Wild & Willow products like spices, seasonings, soups and cheeseball mixes. Perfect to use for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners and easy to pack and take home with you.
We make sure to stop by the Outpost every time we are in town for a bite, desert and some shopping. The ambiance, decor and seating section are very welcoming. The building itself looks like a cottage. It’s one of the most instagrammable spots in Jefferson TX.
16. Browse the Shelves of the Jefferson Carnegie Library
The Jefferson Carnegie Library was constructed in 1907 and is currently one of only 5 operating Carnegie libraries in Texas out of the original 34. Build with donation by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who was devoted to education. At one point this library served all of Marion County and is housed in a beautiful building designed by architects Hallett & Rawson of Des Moines.
17. Unwind at the Otstott Park Gazebo
Jefferson is a very charming town and taking a walk through it is very relaxing. One of my favorite spots in town is the charming, picture perfect Otstott Park. Set against the backdrop of historic buildings like the Immaculate Conception Church, Excelsior House Hotel, Kennedy Manor B&B, and the Jefferson Historical Museum this lovely park features it’s own classic white and green gazebo.
Otstott Park serves as a public gathering place and used for weddings, public celebrations, national holidays and concerts throughout the year. Iron benches and lights create a nostalgic atmosphere where one can read a book, spend time with loved ones or just take a moment to enjoy a breather.
18. Travel Back in Time to Witness a Civil War Battle
The first time I saw Sweet Home Alabama, one of the scenes that made a big impression on me was the Civil War re-enactment. I love history and to be able to witness something like this was fascinating to me. I had never heard of or seen anything like this. Now of course I know that there are many places in the US where you can see history come to live, but I was not raised in North America and grew up during times when information was not at our fingertips as it is now. We are talking no internet days. To my delight I now live just a couple of ours from one of the best re-enactment events in the country taking place in Jefferson, TX.
The Battle of the Big Cypress Bayou aka The Battle for Jefferson re-enactment takes place every year in May during a period of three days. Starting on Friday night the weekend is full of activities and events that are not limited to just the fighting and the historian in me absolutely LOVES that. It’s a living history weekend complete with cemetery illumination, Ladies’ Tea, a Quilting group of ladies re-enacting the creative use of secret codes in quilts to find their way to freedom through the underground railroad and a Grand Ball. How fun is that?!

From Italian, Mexican and Irish cuisine to a lovely bistro, American diners and meals fit for knights, Jefferson Texas has something for everyone and then some. The food is fresh and tasty with varied menus, outstanding service and decor that promises a memorable, quality time out.
We already discussed McGarity’s Saloon, Enoch’s and Port Jefferson Outpost, so here are some of our other favorite restaurants in town. 1852 On Austin is a fine dining restaurant, serving fantastic food with plenty of gluten free options and has live music and events on select dates. The Knight Light Theater is a smoke-free restaurant with a unique Medieval times vibe decor, great wine list and wonderful menu that includes steaks, tapas, pasta, seafood and more.
Auntie Skinner’s Riverboat Club restaurant and bar offers food all day and live entertainment on the weekends. Riverport Barbecue serves great Texas BBQ. Austen Street Bistro is a quaint, centrally located restaurant perfect for lunch. Haywood House restaurant, cocktail bar and lounge serving Euro American cuisine with Southern flare. For breakfast we really liked The Taste of Caddo, both for the food and the decor.
21. Shop at Some of the Coolest Jefferson TX Boutiques
Walking through Jefferson’s downtown you will notice the many cool, fun boutiques stocked with clothes, home decor, memorabilia and gifts. Make sure to set aside some time to see at least a few of them and do check their opening times. There are a few shops with lovely window displays and I was very sad to not be able to go in, since I only saw them after hours.
A great starting place is EmBear’s Vintage Charm. Specializing in custom made items, the boutique’s decor is so fun that going there is an experience. They also have live music and free margaritas on select Saturdays. Fantastic spot for the whole family that will bring smiles to all. Another favorite is Yesteryear Gift Shop and Classy Glitz Boutique offering gifts, collectibles and women’s clothing. The Lazy Draft boutique has the cutest stuff and is such a pleasute to shop at.
And while The Front Porch has Big Foot greeting visitors at the entrance, don’t let that scare you. From home decor to socks and cowboy hats you are sure to find something to take home with you. There are so many other boutiques like Made in the Shade, Sheality and The Willow Tree, but they are too many to name all. Just take a stroll through historic Jefferson’s charming streets and enjoy.
Final Thoughts on Jefferson TX Things to Do

Talking to friends and co-workers I was really surprised to find out that not many people knew about Jefferson TX and all it had to offer. People, some of whom had lived their whole lives in Texas. So here I am reminding those of you who have heard of it and letting the rest of you know know that there is a gem of a town in East Texas awaiting visitors with open arms, ready to show you and your loved ones a great time.
