As we say goodbye to another hot summer in Texas, we start planning for those long awaited Fall trips. Whether you are new to the state, just visiting or call Texas home, you may be making a list, like many of us, of things to do and places to see this Fall. Tyler, TX is certainly one of those places that are worth a visit any time of the year. It offers plenty of activities and attractions to offer couples, families and solo travelers.
Known as the Rose Capital of Texas, Tyler is also one of the best places to see the breathtaking Texas Fall foliage making it the perfect spot for a Fall visit. From towering Piney woods and serene lakes, to a local brewery and charming downtown, this East Texas town has something for everyone. 1. Explore the Piney Woods at Tyler State Park
On top of our list as one the best places to visit near Tyler, TX is Tyler State Park. Not to be missed during any time of the year, but especially in the Fall the park is home to towering pines, maple, hickory and oak trees painted in breathtaking hues of the season that are worth the drive alone. Visit in late November or early December for the best colors and enjoy miles of hiking trails, fishing, or boating.
Tyler State Park is great for romantic or a family day out with plenty of picture perfect picnic spots. Families with small children should check out the Boardwalk Picnic Area, which comes with a playground. For those looking for excercise besides hiking there is mountain biking, swiming or opt to rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard.
The Whispering Pines Nature Trail is not to be missed. It is a short 3/4 mile round trip, easy to moderate hike, great for families or a peaceful stroll. Though a short trail it is a rich woodland with a large list of trees, plants and birds. See pines, red cedars, oaks, and dogwood trees, as well as a waterfall, springs and even a children’s wading pool.
Tyler State Park offers camp grounds as well as cabins for visitors who would like to spend a night or two at the woods. Conveniently located only 20 minutes from downtown Tyler, and just a little over an hour and a half from Dallas, Tyler State Park is one of the best weekend or day trips to take this Fall.
2. Stop & Smell the Roses at the Tyler Rose Garden
Tyler, TX is home to the largest rose garden in the country covering an impressive 14 acres. With more than 200 varieties of roses, the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden is one of the best things to do in Tyler, TX in the Fall. The best time to see the roses in full bloom is during the months of May and October. The garden is open seven days a week and admission is free year round.Don’t miss the Tyler Rose Museum and gift shop for unique exibits and gifts to take home.
As if the aroma of hundreds of rose bushes and day lilies wasn’t enough reason to visit, this time of the year is also when the famous Texas Rose Festival takes place. This historic annual event features a different theme every year and since 1933 has been enchanting visitors with a fairytale like quality. From the Queen’s Coronation and Tea to the Rose Presentation and Parade there is so much to see and do.
Elaborate dresses worn by previous Rose Queens, interactive exhibits, luncheons, art show and did I say there is the Queen’s tea?! The Texas Rose Festival is a fascinating celebrarion, in a beautiful setting showcasing the town’s rich heritage, traditions, incredible community and of course roses.
3. Take a Stroll through Charming Tyler TX Downtown
There is no doubt that visitors will love charming downtown Tyler. Streets lined with local boutique shops , plenty of restaurants, fun events, entertainment and incredible art. While I love walking the streets of Tyler and exploring as no two days are ever the same, here are a few suggestions to get you started. Take a photo at the #WingWall, located right by the Tyler town square which I love anytime of the year, but especcialy in the Fall and during the holiday season. I recomend you start there.
Next, the Plaza Tower houses the Tyler Visitor Center where you can get all the information on anything Tyler and surrounding area. Complete with a gift shop featuring Tyler related products and a galery called Main Street Gallery, showcasing local artists, this is a great starting point for your Tyler vacation. Make sure to check out the many street murals, get some shopping done or catch a show at the Liberty Hall Theater.
Step back in time during your visit to the Historic Cotton Belt Depot and Train Museum. Then tour a historic home like the Goodman-LeGrand Museum and Gardens built in 1859 or McClendon House built in 1878. Families will love visiting The Discovery Science Place – a fun, interactive children’s museum where kids can let their imagination and creativity sore as they spend quality time with friends and family.
Plenty of events taking place in town like the Music Festival, the Tyler Film fest, Art Festival,East Texas State Fair and Holiday Market to name a few. With so much going you are sure to be entertained for days and create memories to last a lifetime.
4. Grab a Bite at Some Incredible Tyler TX Restaurants
When it comes to food and drink Tyler will not leave you wanting. Home to some of the best restaurants in East Texas it offers a great selection of delicious American and world cuisine. Treat yourself to mouthwatering Texas BBQ at Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ or Bodacious BAR-B-Q. While there don’t forget to pick up some spices or decilous sauces. Try authentic Mexican specialties at one of the two Don Juan’s locations, Chuy’s or Mercado’s. For the incredible views and plenty of instagramable spots head over to Lago Del Pino, Kiepersol, The Grove or Javi’s and you will not be disappointed.
Tyler is also home to two top craft breweries and an award-winning winery. Take a seat on the expansive outdoor patio at True Vine Brewing Company or try the ETX Brewing Company. Enjoy an array of light and dark beers and a selection of cider, wine, and non-alcoholic options.
Just south of Tyler Kiepersol Estates where besides the lovely, upscale restaurant guests can enjoy a selection of wines and cocktails and even spend the night at the Kiepersol Bed & Breakfast. Looking for the perfect cup of coffee don’t miss The Foundry Coffeehouse or Café 1948.

Close to both Tyler State Park and downtown, the rental is great for a quiet escape or a romantic weekend. Take a morning walk through the woods. Enjoy a dinner and a cup of tea in the quiet evening on the deck. Or just relax and take in the scent of pines.

We couldn’t put together a Fall travel guide and miss our animal friends at the Caldwell Zoo. Fall is one of the best seasons to visit the zoo and Tyler’s zoo has so many animals to fall in love with that visitors can easily spend an entire day there.
First opened in 1953 the zoo covers over 80 acres and is home to more than 3000 animals. Many of the species are endangered or threatened in the wild. Caldwell Zoo is dedicated to providing a safe environment for animals and help maintain the genetic diversity of the species.
7. Spend a Day at the Lake
Within 15 miles of Tyler, TX are Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine, providing opportunities for fishing, camping and picnicing. If you would like to catch largemouth bass or sunfish spotted bass or crappie head over to Lake Tyler. Lake Palestine, on the other hand, is a great choice for catfish and white and hybrid striped bass. Flat Creek Marina, Lake Palestine Marina, or Villages Marina are great access points on the lakes. You can be sure to find everything you need for your day out on the lake.
